LANSING, Mich. - University of Michigan Health-Sparrow officially broke ground Monday on a $60-million outpatient surgery center, a project designed to expand access to care and modernize surgical services in Mid-Michigan.
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing Surgery Center, located at the corner of East Michigan and Pennsylvania avenues in downtown Lansing, will feature multiple operating rooms and a new MRI unit. The project responds to a growing demand for outpatient services and reflects UM Health-Sparrow’s commitment to the community. The surgery center is expected to open in 2028.
“This center is a direct outgrowth of what our patients are asking for and need,” said Margaret Dimond, Regional President of U-M Health. “This spot on Michigan Avenue allows for better and more convenient parking and is closer to UM Health-Sparrow Lansing.”

The new facility will initially open with four operating rooms and will have the capacity to expand as demand grows. The surgery center also is expected to benefit cardiac patients by providing a new MRI that will help reduce wait times.
The project is part of a broader effort to move outpatient procedures out of the 100-year-old UM Health-Sparrow St. Lawrence campus and ease capacity constraints at the Lansing hospital. In addition to improving patient access, the project represents a significant economic commitment to downtown Lansing and will help create a more modern, vibrant medical campus in the heart of the city.
